Food.
Family.
Friends.
Atmosphere.
Life in America has trained me to be expect certain things on a yearly, monthly, weekly, daily basis. The calendar’s cycle, like many other things, is often taken for granted; and now that I find myself in a new world of new rituals and celebrations, an annual holiday such as Thanksgiving is suddenly gone.
Celebrations and holiday collect meaning over the years. This creation of meaning in which all of us participate as we discover what we truly value in life encouraged me this Thanksgiving. Sitting in diner eating a traditional Thanksgiving meal prepared by Taiwanese hands with new friends who have become like family to me, I was reminded of the culture of holiday.
Eating together.
Living together.
Supporting each other.
Celebrating this existence of food, life, and the other person.
